Steve Carrera, Head CoachSteve Carrera is currently the Head Men's Water Polo Coach at Concordia Unversity. He guided the Eagles to an impressive 20-11 record including a 2nd place finish at the NAIA/CWPA National Championships in 2007. From 2000-2007 he was the head boys and girls water polo coach at Northwood High School. During his tenure at Northwood, the Timberwolves went from brand new program to CIF powerhouse. Under Steve Carrera, the Timberwolves won a pair of league titles (2003, 2006), qualified for CIF 6 years in a row, reached the Division I Final (06) and won the 2006 CIF Southern Section Championship (06). Steve graduated from Irvine High School in 1995 where he received first team all-Sea View League honors and second team all-CIF honors as a senior. He was also named to the South Orange County All-Star Team. He then went to Saddleback College where he played with North Irvine Coaches Jimmy Bray and Ed Carrera. After Saddleback, Steve transferred to Queens College in NYC, where he received a full athletic scholarship to play water polo and swim. He was on the inaugural Premier League Division I Northeast team, and currently plays for North Irvine in Premier League Division II. |

Ed CarreraEd Carrera is currently the Head Boys and Girls Water Polo Coach at Northwood High School. Ed's aquatic experience began at the early age of seven with Irvine Novaquatics. Ed received a varsity letter in swimming his freshman year and qualified for CIF by the time he was a sophomore. He began playing water polo and was a two-year varsity letter winner at Irvine High School. After he graduated, Ed attended Saddleback College in Mission Viejo where he was in the top 10 for scoring, assists, and steals for the state of California.
After playing at Saddleback, Ed traveled to Argentina and played for Club Belgrano. He played two seasons in Argentina before coming back to the US to accept a coaching position at Woodbridge High School. He was the assistant coach at Woodbridge High School for three years and later became the head coach for two years. In 2008 Ed will be playing on the North Irvine Premier League Division II team.

Steve SimmonsSteve started his career as a freshman in high school at El Dorado in Placentia. There as a sophomore, he helped the Golden Hawks achieve a CIF victory while playing in the goal. As a junior, Steve helped lead his team to a back to back CIF victory earning the honors of first team Orange Empire League, and second team all CIF. Steve also had the honor of being invited to play goalie with the “Born in 63” Team, a predecessor to today’s National Cadet Team. As a senior, Steve helped bring his team to the CIF quarter finals and earned the honors of first team all league and first team all CIF. Steve made the transition from goalie to field player at Orange Coast College. There he broke the all time single season scoring record in his first year as a field player. The Lyon’s Club of Costa Mesa awarded him top athlete of the year 1982.
From there, he joined one of the nationally top rated teams UCSB. In the three years he played, the Gaucho’s stayed in the top four ranking while holding the number one position numerous times. Though never achieving a national title, Steve had the privilege of playing with and against many world class athletes including many Olympians. Steve spent 10 years out of the water starting businesses and a large family. When his eldest decided to play water polo, Steve rekindled his love of the sport. He is elated to coach kids; three out of his six included, and give back to a sport that has brought him such joy. In 2008 Steve will be playing on the North Irvine Premier League Division II team.

Nicole HuszczNicole Huszcz is currently the Women's Water Polo Coach at Concordia University. Nicole Huszcz is one of the most accomplished players in Irvine history. Her accomplishments in high school include:
- Three-time CIF First-Team All-American
- Earned First-Team All-County accolades in '97 and '98
- Named Player of the Year in 1999
- Was Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1999
- Led her team to three top-four finishes in the Southern California CIF tournament
- Scored five goals in the Orange County All-Star Game
- Was a member of the 1997-98 National Youth Team
Nicole then played water polo for Stanford and was Team Captain her senior year. In 1999, she was a member of the NCAA championship team. In 2000 the Stanford Cardinal reached the NCAA finals. In 2002, Stanford again reached and won the NCAA final.

Jadi PocekajJadi brings a wealth of International Experience to North Irvine. From 1999-2000 Jadi played water polo as a goalkeeper for “Primorje." In 2001 he played for ”UPAS." His team won Four gold medals in the Croatian State Championships (1994, 1997, 1998, 1999), two silver medals (1995, 1996) and one bronze medal (2000). Won Croatian cup in 1994, Croatian cup finalist in 1995, 1997.
Jadi was voted the best goalkeeper of the Croatian state championship finals in 1999. He also was awarded best team and sportsman of Rijeka, Croatia 1996. Was recognized as an elite athlete by Croatian Olympic committee since 1999. 1999 signed with “Primorje” In his first pro season 1999-2000 placed third, played in Croatian cup semi-finals and Croatian national league championship semi-finals (lost to WPC “POSK” the water polo club champion of the world in 1999).
Jadi is currently the starting Goalkeeper for Concordia University and was selected to the All-Tournament team at the NAIA invitational.

Jure BelamaricJure brings more international flavor to the North Irvine Coaching Staff. Jure started swimming at the age of 6. He started playing water polo at the age of 12. He was a 3 time Croatian National Age Group Champion and was involved with the Croatian National Team from 15-17.
He played two years at American River JC where he was a two time first team all-american selection, 2 time team MVP and 2 time all conference selection. In his first year at ARC he was third in the State in steals (87). In his second year at ARC he was second in the State in goals (120) and second in the State in steals (90).
In his first full season at Concordia, Jure made in immediate impact. Leading the team in scoring (80 goals) and steals (73). He was voted to the NAIA all tournament team. His best individual performance was scoring 5 goals against Pepperdine and 6 goals against Bucknell.
Jure is currently the assistant coach for the Northwood High School girls water polo team and is one of the coaches for the 10U group at North Irvine.
